{"id":2260,"date":"2013-04-02T07:11:01","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T14:11:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archives.ravenandcoyote.net\/?p=2260"},"modified":"2012-10-04T07:32:51","modified_gmt":"2012-10-04T14:32:51","slug":"ingredients-to-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archives.ravenandcoyote.net\/?p=2260","title":{"rendered":"Ingredients to Avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Or&#8230;.\u00a0 You Don&#8217;t want to Eat these.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>TBHQ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an artificial antioxidant that gets used in frozen foods to keep them tasting fresher.\u00a0 However, you will recognize it as &#8220;butane.&#8221;\u00a0 Yes, the fuel for many lighters is also used in our food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural Flavors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of what falls into this category is, actually natural.\u00a0 Unfortunately, not all of it is.\u00a0 Also, many of the things that fall into this category are common or potent allergens.\u00a0 If you have allergy issues, check into this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artificial Colorings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are studies showing that mots of the (Colour) (#) ingredients that we see in &#8230;\u00a0 well&#8230;\u00a0 almost everything&#8230;\u00a0 exacerbate or potentially cause a wide range of health issues.\u00a0 Cancer, hyperactivity, thyroid issues, and allergic sensitivity.\u00a0 Also, these artificial colorings lend no nutritional value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chemical Cocktails<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, you can&#8217;t really watch for these, as they are unlisted.\u00a0 Non-organic produce is sprayed with a wide array of creepy stuff &#8211; chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides&#8230;\u00a0 Residues remain on the plants, and they don&#8217;t exactly wash off easily.\u00a0 With more porous produce, or the produce that has no &#8220;peel&#8221; to remove, they will also absorb some of these chemicals.\u00a0 These chemical cocktails have been long known to cause issues, ranging from cancer to birth defects.\u00a0 Buy organic if you can, and if you can&#8217;t &#8211; make sure to wash down produce thoroughly before using it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sodium Nitrite<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This preservative can mix with chemicals in the stomach to produce things that greatly increase your risk of certain forms of cancer.\u00a0 In fact, two of the nastier forms of cancer (pancreatic and brain) are directly linked to nitrosamines.\u00a0 You will find this in so many different foods, including some of the most &#8220;traditionally American&#8221; &#8211; hot dogs, lunchmeats, bacon&#8230;.\u00a0 It is possible to avoid it, but it isn&#8217;t easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High Fructose Corn Syrup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Shows up as high fructose corn syrup, corn sweetener, corn syrup, and corn syrup solids.\u00a0 It is found everywhere &#8211; from frozen foods to sweets, soda to hot dogs, and almost every sauce you can imagine.\u00a0 It also turns up in a lot of bread and bakery products.\u00a0 This ingredient increases your risk for diabetes.\u00a0 However, more importantly, it encourages over-eating because it tricks your body into thinking it is not full.\u00a0 This is an effect that will continue for a bit after you have &#8220;gone clean&#8221; from the syrup.\u00a0 It also increases triglyceride levels in the bloodstream, which ups a number of risks, including that of heart disease.\u00a0 There is also research that shows that enough of this in your diet causes your brain to slow down, affecting memory and learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RBGH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is found in so much dairy it is actually sort of annoying.\u00a0 It is genetically modified growth hormone, which is injected to stimulate milk production.\u00a0 Unfortunately, this means it ends up in the milk you drink.\u00a0 Research has linked it to prostate, colon, and breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>This hides under a number of names:\u00a0 yeast extract, textured and hydrolyzed proteins, calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, and sadly quite a few more.\u00a0 It is also, unfortunately, something that appears in a lot of foods &#8211; specifically preserved foods, snacks, fast food, and frozen dinners.\u00a0 MSG is another &#8220;hunger modifier&#8221; &#8211; it can trick you into feeling hungrier than you actually are, and cause you to eat more than your body actually needs.\u00a0 It is also a common trigger for migraines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or&#8230;.\u00a0 You Don&#8217;t want to Eat these.
